Just as in our care for people, we empower patients to make their own healthcare decisions for their pets and then help them carry out those decisions.
Pets often fill that relational void as they offer unconditional love, acceptance, comfort and companionship at a time when it’s needed most.
What is a hospice pet? For many people in hospice, pets offer unconditional love, acceptance, comfort, and companionship when it’s needed most—the times when friends and family aren’t seen as frequently or when words are too hard to say. Volunteers go to the patient’s home to provide care and transport pets for grooming and other services. With this loving support, patients are able to complete their journeys and cope with serious illnesses without worrying about their pet’s current or future needs.
Trained volunteers can assist by doing things like walking dogs, transporting pets to veterinary or grooming appointments, or to visit their pet parent in a facility. The program works through local hospice partners to provide pet foo veterinary care and other pet care needs at no cost to patients. We encourage all pet parents to have a plan for their pets should anything happen to them and they can no longer care for their animals.
