Can you deduct home equity interest on your taxes

Your current home is converted to a business property. If you borrow against the rental property and take cash out to buy your personal residence, you will not be able to deduct any of the interest on this loan. You combine the interest from the equity loan with the interest (and taxes) you paid on your primary loan. You CAN claim itemized deductions even if they are less than the standard deduction.

If you rented out the home , you must have used the home more than days during the tax year or of the number of days you rented it out, whichever is greater. If you’re looking to deduct HELOC interest on your taxes, you must be aware of the tax changes. Your loan is tax-deductible only if it was used toward your home.


Think of things like replacing the roof, adding solar panels or remodeling a kitchen or bathroom. So your HELOC is classified for tax purposes as home equity debt. For you to take a home mortgage interest deduction, your debt must be secured by a qualified home. This means your main home or your second home.

Basically everything else. Tax reform also changed the rules for deducting interest paid on home equity loans and home equity lines of credit. Under the old tax rules, you were permitted to take a deduction on home equity debt no matter what purpose you borrowed the money for.
